Outdoor pendant lamps

Outdoor pendant lamps provide overhead lighting for covered terraces, patios, porches and outdoor dining areas. When choosing one, check where it will hang, the available ceiling height and weather protection first, as these factors affect the suitable size, suspension length and position.

Where can you use an outdoor pendant lamp?

Pendant lighting works particularly well above an outdoor dining table or seating area, where light is needed in a defined zone without taking up floor or table space. These lamps have an IP44 rating, which provides protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water.

IP44 does not mean that a lamp can be installed anywhere outdoors. Position pendant lamps in a suitable covered location and follow the product's installation requirements, particularly where the fitting could be exposed to driving rain or other demanding weather conditions.

How to choose the right size and hanging height

Consider both the dimensions of the lamp and its suspension length. Above a dining table, the pendant should sit low enough to illuminate the tabletop but high enough that people can see comfortably across the table and will not hit the fitting when standing up. In an open walkway, allow considerably more clearance underneath.

Before buying, measure from the ceiling or supporting structure to the surface or floor below. Also check whether the cable or chain can be adjusted, especially beneath pergolas, verandas and other structures with lower beams.

What do aluminium and shade materials mean for outdoor use?

Painted and matte aluminium

Aluminium keeps the fitting relatively lightweight while providing a practical material for outdoor lighting. Painted or matte finishes give the metal its finished appearance and should be cleaned with a soft cloth rather than abrasive products that could damage the surface.

Glass or synthetic shades

Glass shades provide a clear, solid surface and can leave the bulb visible depending on the design. Synthetic shades can offer a lighter alternative and may be used to diffuse the light. For either material, regular cleaning helps remove dust and outdoor residue that can reduce light output.

Which bulb should you choose for an E27 outdoor pendant?

These outdoor pendant lamps use an E27 bulb fitting, giving you flexibility to choose a compatible bulb according to the light effect you need. For an outdoor dining area, a warmer colour temperature can provide comfortable ambient light, while the required brightness depends on whether the pendant is the main light source or part of a wider outdoor lighting scheme.

If the bulb is visible through a clear glass shade, its shape and appearance also become part of the lamp's design. Always check the individual fitting for the permitted bulb type and maximum wattage before installation.

What should you check before buying?

  • Confirm that the intended installation position is suitable for an IP44 pendant lamp.
  • Measure the available ceiling height and check the lamp's total drop or adjustable suspension length.
  • Allow enough head clearance, particularly if the fitting is positioned over a walkway or open seating area.
  • Check whether a glass or synthetic shade gives the light distribution and appearance you want.
  • Choose a compatible E27 bulb and check the fitting's maximum permitted wattage.
  • Make sure the mounting point and electrical connection are suitable for the fitting and outdoor installation.

Start by deciding exactly where the pendant will hang and whether that position provides suitable weather protection. Then compare the lamp dimensions, hanging height, shade material and required E27 bulb; these practical details will narrow the choice more effectively than selecting by appearance alone.
